Ingredients

  • Angel Food Cake: Look for a premade angel food cake at your local grocery store or bakery. This light and fluffy cake is perfect for trifles as it pairs beautifully with the other ingredients. It saves you time in the kitchen without compromising on taste.

  • Berries: Choose a variety of fresh, ripe strawberries and blueberries to add vibrant colors and flavors to your trifle cups. Wash them thoroughly and pat them dry before using.

  • Heavy Whipping Cream: This rich and creamy ingredient is used to make homemade whipped cream. It adds a luxurious texture and taste to the trifle cups. Make sure the whipping cream is cold before whipping it to achieve the best results.

  • Sugar Substitute: If you prefer a healthier or low-sugar option, you can use a sugar substitute of your choice in place of regular sugar. Popular options include stevia, erythritol, or any other sweetener you prefer. Adjust the amount to your desired level of sweetness.

Kitchen Tools Required

  • Cutting board

  • Knife

  • Mixing bowl

  • Electric mixer

  • Spoon

  • Individual serving cups

    berry angle food cake jars

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 store-bought angel food cake

    • 1 cup strawberries

    • 1 cup blueberries

    • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

    • 2 tbsp sugar substitute (adjust to taste)

How to Make Berry Trifle Cups

  1. Prepare the Whipped Cream: In a large mixing bowl, pour in the cold heavy whipping cream. Using an electric mixer or a whisk, beat the cream on medium-high speed until it starts to thicken. Add your preferred sugar substitute, a little at a time, while continuing to beat the cream. Beat until stiff peaks form, ensuring not to overmix. Set aside. You can of course buy store bought whip cream my favorite is Whole Foods 365.

  2. Prep the Angel Food Cake and Berries: Slice the store-bought angel food cake into bite-sized cubes. Rinse the berries under cold water, then pat them dry with a kitchen towel. If using strawberries, remove the stems and slice them into smaller pieces. Leave smaller berries, like blueberries, whole.

  3. Assemble the Berry Trifle Cups: Take individual serving cups or glasses and begin by placing a layer of blueberries at the bottom of each cup. Add a layer of angel food cake on top of the blueberries layer. Spoon a generous dollop of whipped cream over the cake, spreading it evenly to cover the layer. Next, add a layer of strawberries on top of the whipped cream. Repeat the layering process with another round of blueberries, angel food cake, whipped cream, and strawberries until the cups are filled to your desired height.

  4. Once assembled, refrigerate the Berry Trifle Cups for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld together and the trifle to set.

  5.  When ready to serve, take the trifle cups out of the refrigerator and enjoy!

Swaps or Alternatives

Here are some swaps and alternatives you can consider for this Berry Trifle Cups recipe:

  • Cake Alternatives: Instead of using store-bought angel food cake, you can opt for pound cake slices. Its buttery texture adds a delightful richness to the trifle cups- no usually very low fat though...

  • Berry Alternatives: Instead of using only berries, you can create a mixed fruit trifle by incorporating other fruits like diced peaches, sliced kiwi, or chunks of pineapple. Experiment with tropical fruits like mangoes, papayas, or passion fruit to add an exotic twist to your trifle cups.

  • Whipped Cream Alternatives: Use a dairy-free whipped topping made from coconut cream or soy-based alternatives for a vegan or lactose-free version. Or use greek yogurt for added protein instead of whip cream.

    Quick Tip(s)

Here are some quick tips to keep in mind when making Berry Trifle Cups:

    • Chill the Whisking Bowl and Whisk: Before making the whipped cream, place the mixing bowl and whisk attachment (if using an electric mixer) in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. Chilling them helps the cream whip up faster and achieve a better consistency.

    • Keep Ingredients Cold: Ensure that the heavy whipping cream is cold straight from the refrigerator. Cold cream whips up better and faster, resulting in a smoother and fluffier whipped cream.

    • Use clear serving cups: I love using clear cups so that guests are able to see the layers! I typically opt for wide mouth mason jars or clear plastic cups that can easily be thrown away.

    • Layer Neatly: To create visually appealing trifle cups, layer the angel food cake, berries, and whipped cream with care. Use a spoon or piping bag to neatly distribute the whipped cream, ensuring each layer is evenly spread. This will result in a beautiful presentation.

    • Allow Time to Chill: After assembling the trifle cups, refrigerate them for at least 1 hour, or even overnight if possible. This chilling time allows the flavors to meld together, the cake to soften slightly, and the trifle to set, resulting in a more cohesive and delicious dessert.
